Dear Knysna people and all readers, I would like to make you aware of Earth hour - if you aren’t already - on 28th of March at 8.30pm we all switch our lights off for one hour to send a strong message to our world leaders to make a stand against pollution at the end of the year at the Kyoto climate conference. So, please all join in, this is a chance for all South Africans to stand together and make our voices heard - for a clean world for our kids!

Please register on: www.earthhour.org.za that you are taking part. You can also register as a company, for even stronger impact! The WWF who brought this social movement to live in 2007, is planning to have 1 Billion signatures for this petition that will be presented at above mentioned conference…so take part and do your bit!!!!

And if you want to do more, like cutting about half your electricity bill by installing a solar water heating system, email me for more info: christine@gardenroutesolar.co.za

Email has become practically everyone’s daily task, and the bulk of users make use of the well known Outlook Express, which is included on all Windows PC’s. Not exactly an inspiring email program, but it works…sort of!

If you’re happy with that, all good, but…there are alternatives and my particular favourite if you’re not using Outlook(as opposed to Outlook Express), is Mozilla Thunderbird! A truly first class product, easily able to cope with volumes of emails, offers loads of add-ons and handles the dreaded spam in a very proficient way!

Get Organized

Thunderbird 2 includes several new features to help you manage your inbox. As you receive email, Thunderbird 2 will help you organize the most important messages to get you through your day.

Message Tagging

Thunderbird 2 allows you to “tag” messages with descriptors such as “To Do” or “Done” or even create your own tags that are specific to your needs.

Customize Your Email Experience

Thunderbird allows you to customize your email to suit your specific needs whether it’s how you search and find messages or listening to music right out of your inbox.

listening to music right out of your inbox.

Your Mail, Your Way

Thunderbird users can increase Thunderbird’s functionality and appearance using hundreds of add-ons. A Thunderbird add-on can let you place voice over IP calls, listen to music, manage contacts, and keep track of birth dates all from your inbox. You can even change the appearance of Thunderbird to suit your tastes.

Message Templates

Thunderbird 2 allows you to easily set up message templates to save you time – especially if you have to send the same mail message repeatedly.

And…there’s loads more, including plenty of support!

So, why not give Outlook Express a break, and use Thunderbird!

For example, while you’re working on a report due tomorrow, you stop to check your e-mail. Some of your messages need attention, but you don’t have time to work on them now.

You could flag each e-mail for follow-up, but you might end up with an Inbox cluttered with flagged e-mails.

However, if you’re using Microsoft Outlook 2007, there’s a handy e-mail to task conversion feature that provides a third alternative that not only relieves Inbox clutter but also reminds you to follow up on those e-mails. To demonstrate, let’s say you received an e-mail about something you want to check out next week. Follow these steps to convert that e-mail into a task on your calendar;

Simply ‘drag’ the email to your ‘Tasks’ folder below your Email Folders, and it’ll open up a dialogue asking when you want to follow up etc.

In the Task pane, enter a day next week as a start date and end date.

Delete any part of the message that does not pertain to the task.

Click Save and Close.

Your e-mail is now listed as a task for you to complete at a later date. You can delete the e-mail from the Inbox, if you want.

So, ‘high-tech’ isn’t actually so difficult…
